Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged
Me (DVD, 1999, Special Edition) In his second screen adventure,
groovy superspy Austin Powers (Mike Myers) returns to 1969, where one after
another hilarious gag is worked into a silly, stumbling, knee-slapping plot.
This time around, Austin Powers' arch-nemesis Dr. Evil (also Myers) is joined
by a midget-sized clone of himself, Mini-Me (Verne Troyer). Having
successfully stolen Austin's "mojo" (his libido), Dr. Evil can
concentrate on his ultimate mission of destroying the world. Meanwhile, Austin,
with the help of gorgeous agent Felicity Shagwell (Heather Graham), must now
not only contend with Dr. Evil, but also the small but vicious Mini-Me. Also
in this installment, Evil's son, Scott (Seth Green), finds out who his mother
is, and Mike Myers stars as a third character--rotund and truly disgusting
Scotsman Fat Bastard. More raucous fun in the spirit of its 1997 smash
predecessor, AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME once again thrills
audiences with its inexhaustible humor. PG-13 UPC: 794043489129 |

Fish Called Wanda (DVD, 1999, Contemporary Classics) In A FISH CALLED WANDA, veteran director Charles Crichton and
scriptwriter-star John Cleese create a dazzling quilt from various strands of
English and American comedy. The plot, in which four disparate characters
attempt a daring heist, comes from Ealing caper comedies, such as Crichton's
own THE LAVENDER HILL MOB. Cleese and Michael Palin, as the hit man with a
stutter and a love of animals, come from the anarchic tradition of Monty
Python. The movie pays savage tribute to another Ealing comedy, THE
LADYKILLERS, as Palin attempts to kill a witness to the gang's getaway. The
glamorous con woman (Jamie Lee Curtis) is from Preston Sturges's great comedy
THE LADY EVE, while Kevin Kline provides his own unique feverish comic
intensity. |

penguin, one of the most resilient animals on earth. Each summer, after a
nourishing period of deep-sea feeding, the penguins pop up onto the ice and
begin their procession across the frozen tundra of Antarctica. Walking
doggedly in single file, they are a sight to behold. Hundreds converge from
every direction, moving instinctively toward their mating ground. Once there,
they mingle and chatter until they find the perfect mate--a monogamous match
that will last a year, through the brutal winter and into the spring. During
that time, the mother will give birth to an egg and then leave for the ocean
to feed againG UPC: 012569751163 |

Minority Report (DVD, 2002, 2-Disc
Set, Widescreen) The science-fiction thriller
MINORITY REPORT, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, is
based on a short story by renowned writer Philip K. Dick. In the year 2054,
in Washington, D.C., murder has been eliminated thanks to Precrime, a program
that uses the visions of three psychics, called Precogs (an abbreviation for
precognitive thinkers), to arrest and imprison would-be murderers before they
have a chance to kill. Tom Cruise plays John Anderton, a Precrime enforcer
who believes in the system for his own personal reasons--years back his young
son was abducted, and he has dealt with the loss by becoming a high-strung
Precrime officer. The director of Precrime (Max von Sydow) is eager to take
the program national, and feels threatened by an ambitious federal agent
(Colin Farrell) who is bent on finding a flaw in the system. When Anderton finds
himself accused of the future murder of a man he's never met, his faith in
Precrime is instantly shaken. He goes on the run, and is trailed by the
relentless Precrime police. In the tradition of BLADE RUNNER (also based on a
Dick story), MINORITY REPORT is a dark, brooding vision of the future.
Spielberg expertly mixes thrilling chase and suspense sequences (the best of
which involves Anderton being pursued by eye-scanning mechanical spiders) and
stunning special effects with a challenging look at society's willingness to
sacrifice privacy and the notion of free will for convenience and security.
MINORITY REPORT is a thought-provoking and exciting film that ranks with
Spielberg's best. PG-13 UPC: 667068998924 |

Nacho Libre (DVD, 2006, Special

tribulations of the lovable loser is no easy thing, but filmmaker Jared Hess
seems to thrive in this specific cinematic exercise. Working fresh off the
success of NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, Hess finds a similarly endearing
hero-without-a-clue in Ignacio, played by Jack Black (HIGH FIDELITY, KING
KONG), the title character in NACHO LIBRE. Ignacio, growing up in a poor
monastery in Mexico, has dreamed of being a professional wrestler since
childhood. This obsession has led him to a thankless adult existence as
monastery whipping-boy and chef, serving stale, day-old nacho chips to
finicky orphans. In an effort to earn the respect of new nun-hottie Sister
Encarnacion (Ana De La Reguera) and escape the monastery into the greedy
excess of pro wrestling, Ignacio enters a local amateur competition. PG UPC:

Rocky Balboa (DVD, 2007) ROCKY BALBOA, the sixth
installment of the long-running film franchise, should amount to nothing more
than a lame punch line to a TONIGHT SHOW monologue joke. However, just as his
longtime corner man Paulie describes the Italian Stallion himself, this movie
is all heart. Thirty years after Sylvester Stallone first introduced the
underdog backroom brawler from Philadelphia in the Oscar-winning ROCKY, Rocky
Balboa returns for one last dance. Speculation as to whether Balboa, in his
prime, would have been able to defeat lackluster champ Mason "The
Line" Dixon spurs Dixon's management to set up an exhibition fight
between the two. That Balboa is in his 50s in the film and wouldn't be
sanctioned to fight anyone, let alone a man 30 years his junior and in the
prime of life, must be left up to the viewer's ability to suspend disbelief.
To its credit, however, the movie addresses at every turn the insanity of a
man approaching 60 getting back into a boxing ring, and Balboa's impassioned
explanation of his motivations is just believable enough to give all other
improbabilities a free pass. PG UPC:

S1m0ne (DVD, 2003) Viktor Taransky (Al Pacino) is a
washed-up director. The beautiful Nicola (Winona Ryder), has just walked off
the set of his last film, and the head of the studio--who also happens to be
his ex-wife (Catherine Keener)--has just cancelled his contract. Just as a
virtually hopeless Taransky is left wondering what is wrong with Hollywood,
inventor Hank Aleno (Elias Koteas) presents him with a bombshell: a virtual
actress. Created from computer code, Hank's invention--deemed S1M0NE from the
abbreviated Simulation 1 and morphed into Simone for the masses--is
beautiful, talented, and breathtakingly real. Soon, Taransky is editing
Simone's image into his films and creating masterpieces. He devises elaborate
schemes to make Simone appear to be human, all the while masterminding her
every move. As Simone becomes an international superstar, a bewildered
Taransky is left to wonder how real Simone actually is and how much power she
has over him. But his attempts to sabotage her career only drag him further
into the media frenzy that his creation attracts. Written and directed by
Andrew Niccol (GATTACA), S1M0NE proves to be an interesting and insightful
look at the movie business and the star-hungry media. PG-13 UPC: 794043612428 |

Shakespeare in Love (DVD, 1999) In this well-conceived
Elizabethan comedy, writers Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman ask the question:
Who was William Shakespeare's muse? The answer: Viola de Lesseps, a young
noblewoman who dreams of acting on a man's stage. The screenwriters deliver a
cleverly crafted scenario which beautifully illustrates both the early
aspirations of the playwright, and a glimpse into the culture of Elizabethan
theater. Colorful characters, like the Globe theater owner Henslow (played by
Geoffrey Rush), the lead player in the troupe (Ben Affleck), and the Queen
herself (Judi Dench), give the cast charm, wit, and feasibility. The young
playwright who at the start of the film is experiencing writer's block bursts
forth with a lyrical text inspired by the lovely and passionate Viola.
Ultimately this film is about the making of a great play, but most importantly
it is about the power of words. R UPC: 717951003102 |

Shocked (DVD, 1999) Based on true accounts of the
Victoria Thompson murder trial, MESMERIZED tells the story of an 18-year old
orphan who is forced into an arranged marriage with a cruel older man. Set in
New Zealand in the 1800s, this drama stars Jodi Foster as penniless, naive
Victoria, who at the young age of 17, is coerced to move into her new
husband's home. Before long, Victoria realizes that Oliver Thomspon (John
Lithgow) has some strange sexual habits, and an abusive nature. Concerned for
her own safety, Victoria ponders what desperate measures she'll have to take
in order to become free of this terrible arrangement. Thus, when Oliver turns
up dead, Victoria becomes the prime suspect, arousing the scorn of the entire
nation. Both leads give solid performances as Victoria and Oliver, with
Foster's understated performance as Victoria nicely contrasting Lithgow's
more extravagant portrayal of Oliver. The film thrives from this interesting
couple dynamic. Rated PG UPC: 779836202598 |

Sin City (DVD, 2006) Adapted from Frank Miller's
graphic novels, SIN CITY is Robert Rodriguez's striking film noir infused
with fantasy, taking place in a world where it is eternally nighttime and
everything is drenched in rain and violence. Using a unique combination of
silvery black and white digital photography with occasional flashes of bright
color for dazzling punctuation, Rodriguez employs green screen techniques and
paints a backdrop around each scene, using Miller's co-direction as his cue
to match the original setting as closely as possible. Three stories weave
together, occasionally overlapping. With lines delivered flatly in the
hard-boiled style of Raymond Chandler, these tales are about crime, love,
loss, and being preternaturally tough. In the most caustically dramatic
segment, Mickey Rourke plays the fearlessly lovestruck Marv, a
trenchcoat-clad beast who falls in love with prostitute Goldie (Jaime King) only
to find her murdered by a demonic cannibal (Elijah Wood). In another segment,
Bruce Willis plays Hartigan, a rogue cop with a "bum ticker" whose
goal in life is to save Nancy (Jessica Alba), an innocent stripper, from a
murderous rapist (Nick Stahl). The third segment stars Clive Owen as a
detective caught between murdered cop Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro) and a
slew of lethally dangerous vixens lead by Gail (Rosario Dawson). R UPC:

Spellbound (DVD, 2004) Jeff Blitz's Academy
Award-nominated documentary is an affecting, inspiring look at eight American
children as they make their way to compete in the 1999 National Spelling Bee
in Washington D.C. Defying all stereotypes and categorizations, the spellers
that Blitz chooses to focus on run the ethnic and socioeconomic gamut. Emily
is from wealthy New Haven, Connecticut, while April, the daughter of a bar
owner from Pennsylvania, spends her summers studying. Harry is an intense,
quick-witted boy from New Jersey, while Ashley is the African-American
daughter of a single Washington, D.C. mother. Gifted Florida resident Nupur
is the daughter of Indian parents while Ted hails from a small Missouri town
where physical prowess is prized over mental ability. The daughter of Mexican
immigrant parents, driven Angela comes from Texas, and Neil is a
well-prepared East Indian boy from the wealthy California coast. Blitz
provides several minutes at home with each child before we accompany them to
the National Bee, where we are swiftly reminded that only one of them has a
shot at winning. As engrossing and emotional as the best fiction, one comes
away from SPELLBOUND with the feeling that--whether victorious or not--the
children whose tales it tells are walking into limitless futures. Not

Stranger Than Fiction (DVD, 2007) Known to most audiences for his
hilarious characters, funnyman Will Ferrell continues to try his hand at more
serious material with STRANGER THAN FICTION. The film comes as relatively
light fare for director Marc Forster, whose previous works were FINDING NEVERLAND
and MONSTER'S BALL. While not exactly a drama, the film shifts between
humorous and heavy realms, one of its central questions being: "What
makes a comedy or a tragedy?" In WINTER PASSING and MELINDA AND MELINDA,
Ferrell awkwardly occupied a strange space that was neither clearly dramatic
nor comedic, leaving audiences confused over whether to laugh at the actor or
with him. PG -13 UPC: 043396154094 |

T2 - The Extreme DVD Edition (DVD,

the human resistance. Sarah, John, and the Terminator counter by going after
the scientist responsible for developing Skynet, the computer system fated to
destroy humanity, leading to an explosive and spectacular clash with the fate

World Trade Center (DVD, 2006,
Widescreen Version; Sensormatic) The events of September 11 left
an indelible mark on most Americans, and certainly on those in the New York
City area. Veteran officer Sergeant John McLoughlin (Nicholas Cage) and his
team, including rookie Will Jimeno (Michael Pena) are gathering equipment to
enter the burning Twin Towers when the concourse comes crashing down around
them. Twenty feet below the surface, pinned by debris and unable to reach
anyone by radio, the officers must rely on their own will--and on each
other--to survive. Above ground, their families watch the towers fall,
uncertain whether or not McLoughlin and Jimeno are there, since they are
normally assigned to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Stone's film depicts
the horror and heartbreak of the victims, survivors, and their families with
an understated, subtle touch. It may be just one story of many from September

Wrestler (DVD, 2009, Checkpoint;
Sensormatic; Widescreen) At first glance, Darren
Aronofsky's THE WRESTLER may seem like a departure for the oftentimes
frenetic filmmaker, and in some ways it is. When this story of a
past-his-prime performer is compared to PI, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, and THE
FOUNTAIN, there is relatively little trace of psychoscientific addiction
imagery, hip-hop editing, or grimly elegant peeks into dreams, nightmares,
and otherworlds. Comic moments are plentiful. Aronofsky's signature close-ups
of faces have been replaced with ones that force themselves into wounds
inflicted for visceral spectacle. Much of the time the camera floats and bobs
with an observant, almost documentary-like quietness, ethereally following
the wrestler as if it were his past, and the viewer may perceive vague
connections to a later, lonelier, less legitimate Rocky Balboa. But Mickey Rourke
isn't the Italian Stallion--he's Randy "The Ram" Robinson, a man
who has spent decades slicing himself open in choreographed fights while
adoring crowds roar. Pro wrestling isn't as lucrative as it was for Randy in
the 1980s, but he stays at it while working menial jobs because performing
isn't just the only thing he craves--it's the only thing that, at 50, he
knows how to crave. R UPC: 024543574996 |

Zathura (DVD, 2006, Special
Edition, Widescreen) Actor-turned-director Jon
Favreau (SWINGERS, ELF) delivers another work of intelligent, charming family
fare with this space adventure, based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg
(JUMANJI). Older brother Walter (Josh Hutcherson) and the younger Danny
(Jonah Bobo) are constantly at war with one another, bickering over the
mediating voice of their long-suffering father (Tim Robbins). When he has to
go to the office to replace some papers the boys destroyed in their
crossfire, he leaves them in the dubious care of older sister Lisa (Kristen
Stewart), who is sleeping upstairs. When Danny discovers an old board game
called Zathura stored in the basement, his excitement is lost on Walter, who
has no time for such old, boring toys. Soon, however, the game becomes
impossible to ignore, as the boys are transported into space, and one of them
must win in order to make it home again. Each turn brings a new, often
dangerous, surprise, and the boys are faced with a murderous robot, an
explosive meteor shower, and lizard-like aliens, while poor Lisa is
cryogenically frozen early in the game. The adventure yields some
heartwarming, family-friendly life lessons, and Dax Shepard (IDIOCRACY) is
unusually subdued in his role as a stranded astronaut. PG UPC: 043396134751 |
